📍 China
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park lies in northwestern Hunan, within the wider Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its defining landscape is a dense gathering of quartz-sandstone pillars, shaped by weathering and erosion and rising above forested ravines. Vegetation clings to ledges and crowns the narrow summits, giving the rock formations a striking contrast of pale stone and deep green. At Yuanjiajie, cliff-edge viewpoints reveal overlapping ranks of towers, with drifting mist separating them into distinct layers and emphasizing the depth of the valleys. Along Golden Whip Stream, the perspective shifts to the foot of the formations, where rock walls loom above the wooded watercourse. These contrasting views—from above the ravines and beneath the cliffs—help convey the scale of a landscape that a single isolated pinnacle cannot fully express.
