Tapiau Castle stands in the center of Gvardeysk, the former East Prussian town of Tapiau, in Russia’s Kaliningrad region. Established by the Teutonic Order and rebuilt in brick during the 14th century, it later served as a ducal residence and administrative site before being converted to institutional and prison use. Centuries of alteration have left a complex in which medieval brickwork coexists with later additions, reflecting the region’s shifts from Prussian rule to modern Russia. Its heavy walls, narrow openings, steep rooflines, and enclosed-courtyard character distinguish it from the surrounding low-rise town, while weathered red brick provides the strongest visual link to its Gothic origins.
