Zaanse Schans is a clustered historic neighborhood of working windmills, painted wooden houses and traditional workshops on the banks of the Zaan near Zaandam, preserved as a living representation of regional craft and industry. Visually it's defined by the vertical silhouettes of windmill sails against low Dutch skies, rows of deep-green timber façades with white trim, and narrow canals that give strong reflective compositions. Photographers find clear compositional cues in the repetitive gable lines, textured wood grain and brick quay, and the scale contrast between people and oversized mills.
