📍 Japan
The Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims stands at the heart of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, on a ceremonial axis linking the Peace Flame with the preserved Atomic Bomb Dome. Designed by architect Kenzo Tange and unveiled in 1952, its curved concrete arch shelters a stone chest containing a register of people who died as a result of the atomic bombing, with names added as further deaths are confirmed. The inscription beneath the arch is commonly translated as, “Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil.” From the front, the arch precisely frames the Flame and Dome, creating one of Hiroshima’s most recognizable and symbolically layered views. The monument is also a focal point of the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6, so visitors should treat the area with the quiet respect appropriate to an active memorial.
