📍 From Courtyard, China
Yonghe Temple, also known as the Lama Temple, is an active Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Beijing’s Dongcheng district, housed in a former Qing imperial residence. It was home to the future Yongzheng Emperor before his accession and was later converted into a monastery under his successor, Qianlong. Its courtyards lead along a central axis through red gates and halls with yellow glazed roofs, creating a striking sequence of framed views. In the Wanfu Pavilion stands a towering Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood. Incense smoke and worshippers at prayer make clear that this grand complex remains a living religious site.
