The sacred city of Varanasi is a timeless gem located on the banks of the Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India, an ancient city which has become an important religious and cultural hub for Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The city is closely associated with the holy Ganges, with a series of ghats (steps) leading down to the water’s edge. Aside from spiritual activities, the variety of colorful bazaars and markets, temples, and holy sites make Varanasi a great place to explore. The best way to enjoy Varanasi is to take a slow and leisurely walk along the many ghats and alleys, taking in the sounds, colors and smells all around you. Pausing to visit some of the kings and workers as they labor at their daily tasks, or talking to the vast array of holy men, who frequent the ghats or can often be found taking an evening dip in the river Ganges.
