Yeni Cami (New Mosque) in Eminönü, Istanbul, is a major late-Ottoman imperial mosque and a landmark at the Golden Horn’s entrance. Commissioned as a Valide Sultan project by Safiye Sultan in 1597 and completed in 1665, it anchors a bustling waterfront district and is notable both for its ceremonial role and for the way its complex shaped the surrounding urban fabric.
Architecturally the mosque blends classical Ottoman forms with 17th‑century Baroque influences: a cascade of domes culminating in a central dome, a wide forecourt with arched portico, twin slender minarets with multiple balconies, and an attached külliye (complex) that historically included a caravanserai, shops and a large sebil (public fountain). Interior surfaces display İznik tile panels, richly painted and gilded wooden ceilings, Quranic calligraphy and stained-glass windows that filter Golden Horn light, creating a jewel-like atmosphere. Historically the prolonged construction, halted and resumed across decades, reflects court politics and the shifting fortunes of the Valide Sultanate. Uniquely, the mosque’s adjacent Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) was part of its endowment to fund upkeep, linking worship, commerce and civic service. Its prominent waterfront position and iconic silhouette make Yeni Cami an emblem of imperial patronage and Istanbul’s maritime life.
