A medieval Jewish quarter (xudería) in the historic center of Ourense, the Xudería de Ourense preserves the urban imprint and memory of a once-significant Jewish community that lived and worked here from the Middle Ages until the expulsions and conversions of the late 15th century. It is important as a rare surviving example in Galicia of the spatial organization and social presence of Jewish life — narrow, irregular lanes clustered near the cathedral and the city’s core, reflecting how minority communities were integrated into medieval urban fabrics.
Historically the quarter housed artisans, merchants and scholars; its decline after 1492 and the Church–crown policies that followed explain why only archaeological traces and toponymy remain. Architecturally the area is notable not for grand monuments but for its vernacular stone houses, medieval street plan, and occasional preserved doorways and lintels that hint at older fabric beneath later renovations. Unique tourism features include interpretive plaques and walking routes that link the Xudería with nearby landmarks (cathedral, Roman bridge, thermal fountains), and occasional cultural events and guided walks focused on medieval Jewish heritage and Galicia’s converso history.
