Symphonic Sculpture is a stained-glass tower at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, set among outdoor artworks in the mountainous landscape near Gora. Created by French artist Gabriel Loire, it is a sculpture visitors can enter, with a central spiral staircase rising through a cylindrical enclosure of richly colored glass. Sunlight filtering through blue, red, green, and yellow panes casts shifting color across the interior, while the dark metal staircase forms a geometric contrast to the luminous walls. Looking upward emphasizes the stairway’s curves and the enveloping scale of the glass; from the viewing platform at the top, the scene opens onto the museum’s sculpture gardens and the surrounding Hakone hills.
