West Lake is a freshwater lake on the western side of central Hangzhou, with wooded hills on three sides and the city along its eastern shore. Celebrated in Chinese poetry and painting for centuries, its landscape of causeways, islands, gardens and pagodas reflects a long tradition of shaping nature into carefully composed scenery. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. The tree-lined Su and Bai causeways create long, low lines across the water, contrasting with the hills and the silhouette of Leifeng Pagoda above the southern shore. Among the lake’s most recognizable features are the three small stone pagodas at Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, which stand in the water near an island. Broad stretches of open water give photographs a layered composition of shoreline foliage, boats, distant towers and hills, while mist can soften the boundary between the lake and its surrounding landscape.
