📍 From 杨公堤 / Yanggong Causeway, China
West Lake lies beside central Hangzhou in Zhejiang, with wooded hills on three sides and the city to the east. Its landscape of open water, islands, temples and causeways has been shaped over centuries, becoming a celebrated subject of Chinese poetry and painting and an influential model for garden design. Recognized as a UNESCO cultural landscape, it combines natural scenery with deliberately composed views. The Bai and Su causeways, named after the poets Bai Juyi and Su Shi, carry willow-lined paths and bridges across the water, framing overlapping layers of shoreline and hills. Leifeng Pagoda punctuates the southern skyline, while the three small stone pagodas of Three Pools Mirroring the Moon form one of the lake’s signature scenes. Summer lotus beds bring pink blossoms and broad green leaves to the margins, contrasting with the subdued tones of distant hills and reflections on the water.
