West Lake is a freshwater lake on the western side of central Hangzhou, with wooded hills on three sides and the city along its eastern shore. Its UNESCO-listed cultural landscape reflects centuries of Chinese garden design, poetry, and painting: open water, islands, causeways, temples, and pagodas form carefully composed scenes rather than an untouched natural setting. The Bai and Su causeways cross the lake, creating long lines of willow-lined banks and arched bridges against the surrounding hills. Leifeng Pagoda rises near the southern shore, while the slender Baochu Pagoda marks the northern skyline, giving wide views distinctive architectural anchors. Three Pools Mirroring the Moon—the small stone pagodas standing in the water near an island—features on the reverse of China’s one-yuan banknote. Lotus beds, willow branches, and reflections provide closer subjects, contrasting with the broad expanses of water that define the lake’s familiar panoramas.
