Xàbia, also known as Jávea, is a coastal town in Alicante province, on Spain’s northern Costa Blanca, with the limestone massif of Montgó rising behind it. Its three distinct centres—the historic old town, the fishing port and the sandy Arenal beachfront—reveal different layers of its Mediterranean identity. Inland from the shore, narrow streets cluster around Sant Bartomeu, a fortified Gothic church whose defensive form reflects the coast’s history of maritime raids. Warm, honey-coloured tosca sandstone gives the church and many old doorways their characteristic texture. At the port, working fishing boats contrast with the white, sculptural Church of Our Lady of Loreto, whose roof evokes a boat’s hull. Rocky coves and the headlands of Cap de Sant Antoni and Cap de la Nau place this urban life within a coastline of pale cliffs and blue water.
