📍 United States
Wormsloe State Historic Site lies on the Isle of Hope, southeast of central Savannah, and preserves part of the former estate established by English colonist Noble Jones in the 1730s. Its best-known view is the long, symmetrical entrance avenue beneath an arching canopy of live oaks draped with Spanish moss; the trees were planted in the 1890s, well after the colonial period they now evoke. Beyond the avenue, wooded trails lead toward the tabby ruins of Jones’s fortified house, built from a durable mixture of lime, sand, shells, and water. The contrast between the monumental oak corridor and the rough, pale ruins gives Wormsloe two distinct visual identities: carefully shaped Southern landscape and surviving evidence of early colonial Georgia.
