Worcester Cathedral stands above the east bank of the River Severn, at the southern edge of Worcester’s historic city centre. The seat of the Bishop of Worcester, it brings together a surviving Norman crypt and later Gothic architecture, making its interior a visible record of centuries of rebuilding. Its royal monuments include the tomb of King John and the chantry of Prince Arthur, Henry VIII’s elder brother, whose death changed the Tudor succession. The central tower and long roofline form a distinctive part of the riverside skyline, with views from the opposite bank showing the cathedral’s scale above the surrounding buildings. Inside, the crypt’s low vaults and closely spaced columns contrast with the height and repeated arches of the nave, while the cloister offers a more enclosed setting of stone tracery and sheltered walkways.
