📍 From East Terrace Garden, United Kingdom
Windsor Castle stands above the River Thames in Windsor, Berkshire, its towers and battlements dominating the town’s skyline. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it developed from a defensive stronghold into a royal palace and remains a working royal residence used for state occasions. The Round Tower rises from the castle’s central mound, giving a distinctive focal point to the sprawling complex of courtyards, stone walls and ceremonial buildings. In the Lower Ward, St George’s Chapel displays the tall windows and intricate stonework of Perpendicular Gothic architecture; it is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter and the burial place of monarchs including Henry VIII and Elizabeth II. From the south, the straight, tree-lined Long Walk creates a striking axis towards the castle, framing its elevated silhouette and contrasting the breadth of Windsor Great Park with the dense town around its walls.
