📍 United Kingdom
The White Cliffs of Dover rise above the English Channel on Kent’s coast, beside the busy port of Dover and facing France across the Strait of Dover. Their chalk formed from the remains of microscopic marine organisms deposited in an ancient sea, with dark bands of flint interrupting the pale rock faces. Long associated with arrival in Britain, the cliffs became a powerful image of wartime hope through Vera Lynn’s song “The White Cliffs of Dover.” Visually, the landscape is defined by the contrast between white chalk, green cliff-top grassland and the sea below. Views along the coast reveal successive headlands, while ferries approaching the harbour give a sense of the cliffs’ scale and connect this recognizable coastline to Dover’s continuing role as a gateway across the Channel.
