Whitby
📍 United Kingdom
Whitby is a historic fishing and maritime town on North Yorkshire’s coast, where the River Esk meets the North Sea. The ruins of Whitby Abbey crown the East Cliff above St Mary’s Church, with the 199 steps connecting the churchyard to the narrow streets of the old town. Captain James Cook learned his seafaring trade here, and the ship that became his Endeavour was built in Whitby. Bram Stoker used the town as a setting in Dracula, giving its cliff-top ruins and churchyard an enduring literary association. Whitby also has a distinctive craft heritage in jet, the dark fossilized wood used for jewellery and closely associated with Victorian mourning dress. Across the harbour, tightly packed red-roofed houses rise beneath the abbey, while fishing boats and lighthouse-topped piers establish the town’s working coastal character. The contrast between the sheltered river mouth and the open sea is central to its recognizable skyline.
