Whatipu Beach lies at the southern end of Auckland’s Waitākere Ranges, where the Tasman Sea meets the entrance to Manukau Harbour. Its broad black-sand flats, wind-shaped dunes, wetlands and dark volcanic cliffs create one of the region’s most rugged coastal landscapes. Caves carved by waves now sit inland from the shore, evidence of major sand accumulation that pushed the coastline outward during the 20th century. Photographs often gain scale from the tiny figures crossing the open sand, while cliff silhouettes, surf lines and shifting cloud emphasize the exposed setting. The surrounding dunes and wetlands are sensitive habitats, so visitors should keep to established tracks.
