Whaligoe Steps descend a narrow cleft in the sea cliffs near Ulbster, on the east coast of Caithness south of Wick. The long, zigzagging stone stairway once linked the clifftop with a small natural harbour used by fishing boats; catches were carried back up the same demanding route. At the foot, the grassy “Bink” landing area is enclosed by dark rock walls and the open North Sea, giving the site its distinctive sense of scale. From above, the steps form strong leading lines through layered stone and vegetation, while below, sheer cliffs frame waves, seabirds and changing coastal light. The descent is steep and uneven, with exposed edges and no easy alternative access.
