Whakaari/White Island is an active volcanic island situated off the coast of Whakatane in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty. Visited by Maori for centuries, the island is home to the country's only active marine volcano. Boasting dramatic views from the summit and a sulfurous crater lake, the uninhabited island is part of several nature reserves, including the Whakatane Heads Marine Reserve. Day trips to the island run from the town of Whakatane and include guided tours of the volcanic crater, a walk around the rim of the crater, and other activities such as mud baths and caving. Tourists also visit White Island as part of whale and dolphin watching cruises.
