📍 Germany
Westfalenpark is Dortmund’s largest cultivated green space and a multi-layered urban park combining formal gardens, recreation areas and event facilities on grounds shaped for the postwar Bundesgartenschau. It’s important as a regional cultural and horticultural hub: visitors come for the extensive Rosarium of themed rose beds, a varied plant palette, water features and sweeping lawns that host seasonal plant displays.
Historically the park grew out of the 1959 Bundesgartenschau; the city retained and expanded the exhibition grounds into a permanent public landscape. The skyline landmark is the Florianturm, the tall TV/observation tower erected for the garden show, which defines views across the park. Architectural and designed elements include the formal rosarium layouts, a Japanese garden corner with characteristic stone and water details, lakes with promenades and an open‑air stage (Seebühne) used for concerts and performances. Westfalenpark uniquely serves as Dortmund’s festival ground: it regularly stages music festivals, flower shows and special horticultural exhibitions, and certain attractions (tower observation deck, special exhibitions) carry individual admission fees.
