Wellington Arch
📍 United Kingdom
Wellington Arch is a historic monument gracing the entrance to the Apsley House in Greater London. It was erected in 1825-7 in celebration of the Duke of Wellington’s victories over Napoleon. The arch once formed the grand entrance to the eastern boundary of Westminster, and is the only surviving piece of the Wellington Monument. The two bronze plaques on either side of the monument depict the Duke and his victories at Vitoria, Salamanca and Waterloo, and are accompanied by the figures of Victory and Fame. The statue of the Duke of Wellington atop the arch was designed by Matthew Cotes Wyatt, while the four other figures carved around its base commemorate the Duke’s important allies in his campaigns. Located on Hyde Park Corner, the arch is a popular visitor attraction and can be admired from the outside during opening times.
