The vineyards around Dernau climb the steep sides of the Ahr Valley, enclosing this wine village in terraces, narrow plots and stone retaining walls. Their sheltered, sun-facing slopes and slate-rich soils support the red wines for which the Ahr is known, especially Spätburgunder, an unusual emphasis at this northerly latitude. From elevated sections of the Rotweinwanderweg, vineyard rows form strong diagonals above Dernau’s rooftops, with wooded ridges enclosing the valley; autumn adds bands of yellow, copper and deep red. The landscape also reflects the close bond between local winegrowing and the Ahr River, whose devastating 2021 flood severely affected Dernau and its wineries.
