Weimar is a compact cultural city in Thuringia, closely associated with writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller and the intellectual movement known as Weimar Classicism. Its historic center combines restrained classical façades, the Goethe–Schiller monument on Theaterplatz, and leafy Park an der Ilm, while buildings linked to the Bauhaus recall the influential design school founded here in 1919. That same year, Germany’s National Assembly met in Weimar, lending its name to the Weimar Republic. Photographically, the city’s identity lies in the contrast between formal squares, literary landmarks, modernist geometry, and parkland along the Ilm. Nearby Buchenwald Memorial adds an essential, sobering dimension to understanding Weimar’s place in German history.
