📍 Thailand
Wat Ratchanatdaram Worawihan is a royal Buddhist temple beside Ratchadamnoen Avenue in Bangkok’s historic Phra Nakhon district, close to the Golden Mount. King Rama III founded it in 1846 in honor of his granddaughter, Princess Somanass. Its defining landmark is Loha Prasat, the “Metal Castle,” whose tiered, square structure differs strikingly from the bell-shaped stupas familiar at many Thai temples. Its 37 metal spires represent the 37 qualities associated with the Buddhist path to enlightenment, giving the repeated forms religious meaning as well as visual rhythm. The open forecourt reveals the tower’s stepped silhouette, while its gilded spires, white walls, and neighboring red-orange tiled roofs create a distinctive contrast of color and geometry.
