📍 Thailand
The stairs of Wat Phra That Doi Kham lead to a hilltop Buddhist temple on Chiang Mai’s southwestern outskirts, above Royal Park Rajapruek. Doi Kham means “Golden Mountain,” distinguishing this shrine from Wat Phra That Doi Suthep farther north. Naga serpent balustrades frame the ascent, incorporating a guardian motif familiar in northern Thai temple architecture. The repeated steps and sinuous railings draw the eye uphill against the wooded slope, emphasizing the climb between the surrounding lowlands and the sacred precinct. At the summit, the temple’s chedi and large seated Buddha anchor the complex, while its terrace overlooks the Chiang Mai plain.
