Rich in Lanna heritage, Wat Chiang Man is considered the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, believed to have been established by King Mengrai in 1296. Inside, marvel at two important Buddha images: the tiny Crystal Buddha, reputed to have protective powers, and the marble Phra Sila Buddha. The temple’s impressive elephant-clad chedi, adorned with 15 elephant sculptures, reflects a distinctive blend of Lanna and Singhalese influence. Tranquil gardens offer a serene escape, while thoughtful signage explains the site’s history and significance. Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering, and explore the surrounding Old City for nearby cultural gems.
