Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, rises on the west bank of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River in Bangkok Yai, directly opposite the historic Phra Nakhon district. Its defining feature is a tall central prang surrounded by four smaller towers, forming a steep, symmetrical silhouette associated with Mount Meru in Buddhist cosmology. The surfaces are densely ornamented with floral mosaics assembled from porcelain and ceramic fragments, creating intricate textures that become clearer at close range. From the Phra Nakhon riverfront, the temple’s layered spires stand cleanly against the sky and reflect warm late-day light, while boats add movement and scale to the scene. As Wat Arun is an active Buddhist temple, visitors should wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees and behave respectfully around worship areas.
