📍 From Tower, United States
The Washington Monument is a marble obelisk honoring George Washington, the first U.S. president, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Rising 555 feet, it anchors the capital’s broad ceremonial landscape: the U.S. Capitol lies to the east, while the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool lie to the west. A visible change in the marble’s color partway up marks a long interruption in its construction, turning a chapter of its history into part of its appearance. Seen across the Reflecting Pool, the monument’s pointed silhouette gains a reflection; closer in, the circle of American flags gives a sense of its scale.
