📍 From Japanese Pagoda, United States
The Washington Monument is a 555-foot marble-faced obelisk on the National Mall, aligned between the U.S. Capitol and Lincoln Memorial and just south of the White House. Built to honor George Washington, it was completed in 1884 after a long construction interruption; the resulting change in stone color remains visible about one-third of the way up, turning the monument itself into a record of its history. Its simple geometry anchors many of the capital’s best-known sightlines, rising above lawns, memorials, and the Tidal Basin. From the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, its reflection emphasizes the Mall’s formal symmetry, while spring cherry blossoms provide a softer frame from the south. Entry to the observation level requires a timed ticket and security screening.
