📍 United States
The Washington Monument Fountain stands in Eakins Oval at the head of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, directly below the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Designed by German sculptor Rudolf Siemering and dedicated in 1897, the elaborate bronze-and-granite ensemble places George Washington on horseback above allegorical figures, Native American figures, American wildlife, and fountain basins representing the nation’s landscape and waterways. Its layered sculpture rewards close views, while from farther down the Parkway the monument becomes part of Philadelphia’s grand civic axis, framed by the museum’s classical façade. Water, dark bronze, pale stone, and the steep rise of the museum steps create strong contrasts and a recognizable sense of scale.
