Wartburg
📍 From Burschenschaftsdenkmal, Germany
Wartburg crowns a wooded ridge above Eisenach in Thuringia, its towers and pale stone walls forming one of Germany’s most recognizable castle silhouettes. Founded in the Middle Ages, it preserves a Romanesque palace alongside later Gothic, half-timbered, and restored historicist elements. The castle is closely associated with Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and with Martin Luther, who lived here in protective seclusion in 1521–22 and translated the New Testament into German. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wartburg also shaped German Romantic ideas of national history. Photographs from the approach emphasize its dramatic elevation, while the courtyards reveal layered masonry, arcades, timber framing, and views toward Eisenach and the Thuringian Forest.
