📍 United States
Beside the lighthouse on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, the Warden’s House is the roofless shell of the residence once occupied by the federal prison’s wardens and their families. Built in 1921, it predates the island’s conversion from a military prison to a federal penitentiary in 1934. A fire in 1970, during the Native American occupation of Alcatraz, reduced the house to ruins. Empty window openings and exposed masonry contrast with the neighboring lighthouse and massive cellhouse, bringing the island’s domestic life, prison history and later Indigenous activism into one compact setting.
