Wallfahrtskirche Maria Laach is one of the most distinctive and beautiful churches in Austria. Located in Maria Laach am Jauerling, at the end of the Laachersee lake, it was built to honor the Virgin Mary. It's a stunning example of Romanesque architecture, with a Benedictine monastery which still operates today. The complex dates from the 11th century and underwent major renovations during the 19th century. Inside, visitors can admire the remarkable artwork, including the golden arch of the portal of the basilica, the Baroque frescos of the choir stalls, the intricate stained glass windows, and the unbelievable painting of the Ascension of Mary, attributed to Franz Anton Maulbertsch. When visiting the church, make sure to also admire the grounds of the monastery and the adjoining Allerheiligen Cloister.
