📍 From Herzogstand Gipfel, Germany
Walchensee lies south of Kochel am See in the Bavarian Alps, framed by the wooded slopes of Herzogstand, Jochberg and surrounding peaks. One of Germany’s largest and deepest alpine lakes, it is known for exceptionally clear water that shifts from deep blue to turquoise along the shallows. The lake also serves as the upper reservoir for the Walchensee hydroelectric power station, whose water descends to nearby Kochelsee. Its changing light and mountain reflections became a major subject for German painter Lovis Corinth, who worked from the lakeside village of Urfeld. From elevated viewpoints, the branching shoreline, forested peninsulas and broad mountain basin create the lake’s most recognizable composition; at water level, pale stones, transparent shallows and wind-textured surfaces provide a quieter sense of scale.
