Voronezh is the capital of Voronezh Oblast, set along the Voronezh River and its broad urban reservoir in southwestern Russia. Founded as a frontier fortress in 1586, the city became a major shipbuilding center under Peter the Great, where vessels were built for the Azov campaigns and the emerging Russian navy. Much of Voronezh was destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt, giving its center a layered streetscape of Soviet-era avenues, modern buildings, and restored churches. From the embankments, bridges and open water create expansive views, while Admiralteyskaya Square recalls the city’s naval history. The preserved Rotunda, a ruined wartime hospital building, offers a stark visual counterpoint to the reconstructed city around it.
