📍 El Salvador
Volcán Ilamatepec, better known as Santa Ana Volcano, rises above the Los Naranjos highlands in western El Salvador and is the country’s highest volcano at 2,381 metres. This active stratovolcano is distinguished by a broad, steep-walled summit crater containing a vivid turquoise-green acidic lake, with exposed layers of ochre, grey and rust-colored rock revealing its volcanic structure. On clear days, the rim opens to expansive views toward Lake Coatepeque, the sharply defined cone of Izalco and the surrounding coffee-growing landscape. Clouds often sweep across the summit, rapidly changing the contrast and scale of the scene. Access to the crater follows designated hiking routes and may be restricted according to weather or volcanic conditions.
