The Visrokerij is the traditional fish smokehouse in the Zuiderzeemuseum’s outdoor museum in Enkhuizen, where historic buildings bring the settlements of the former Zuiderzee into focus. Fish smoking demonstrates a craft that preserved the catch and supported the region’s fishing economy. That maritime context changed profoundly when the Afsluitdijk closed off the Zuiderzee in 1932, creating the freshwater IJsselmeer. Fish suspended for smoking give the workshop its distinctive visual rhythm, while the practical setting connects the museum’s streets and waterfront buildings to the work that sustained these communities.
