Villa Palagonia sits in Bagheria, a coastal town east of Palermo, and is widely known locally as the "Villa dei Mostri" for its crowd of grotesque stone figures lining terraces and balustrades. The palace’s restrained classical mass contrasts with a riot of caricatured heads, hybrid creatures and contorted torsos that break architectural order and create a theatrical, baroque-inflected surface.
