Villa Jovis
๐Ÿ“ Italy
Villa Jovis crowns Monte Tiberio at the northeastern end of Capri, overlooking the Gulf of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula. Built for Emperor Tiberius in the first century AD, it was the largest of the Roman villas associated with his years on the island and combined imperial reception rooms, residential quarters, baths, service areas, and vast rainwater cisterns. Its fragmented walls and arches still reveal a complex arranged across steep terraces, with pale limestone contrasting against sea and sky. The nearby cliff known as Salto di Tiberio adds dramatic scale to the setting. Reached by a sustained uphill walk from Capri town, the ruins offer broad coastal views and strong compositions through ancient openings.
