Villa di Maser, also known as Villa Barbaro, is a sixteenth-century country residence in Maser, near Asolo in Veneto’s Treviso province. Designed by Andrea Palladio for the brothers Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro, it combines an aristocratic home with the agricultural functions of a rural estate. Its central façade, with Ionic columns and a classical pediment, is joined to long, lower wings, creating a balanced composition against the wooded hillside. Inside, Paolo Veronese’s frescoes turn walls into imaginary landscapes and architectural spaces, with painted figures appearing at doors and balconies. The contrast between Palladio’s measured exterior and Veronese’s playful illusionism gives the villa its distinctive character: outside, the photograph is about proportion and setting; inside, it is about the blurred boundary between real rooms and painted worlds.
