Vík í Mýrdal Church
📍 From Black Sand Beach, Iceland
Vík í Mýrdal Church is situated in the small village of Vík, in South Iceland. It is a stone church, built in 1987. It is the only inhabited place along the southern coast between Reykjavík and Höfn. There are no other churches in the area, so the Vík í Mýrdal Church still serves as a spiritual center for the scattered villages nearby. Its Norwegian-style design makes it a popular destination for visitors who are interested in traditional Icelandic church architecture. Views of the rugged and rocky coastal scenery in the area, as well as the nearby Mýrdalsjökull glacier, are easy to come by from the church grounds. There is also a picture-perfect coastal path that leads from Vík all the way up to Reynisfjara beach, where you can find soaring cliffs, stunning black sand and stunning basalt rock formations.
