📍 India
Vijaydurg Fort occupies a coastal headland at the mouth of Vaghotan Creek in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, with water enclosing it on three sides. Predating the Maratha state, it was enlarged and strengthened under Shivaji and became an important base of Maratha naval power, closely associated with the Angre admirals. Its thick laterite ramparts, rounded bastions, and layered defences show how the shoreline was turned into a defensive advantage. Views along the walls emphasize their scale against the sea, while the sheltered creek provides a clear geographical link to the fort’s maritime history.
