📍 Italy
The Walliser Alpen, or Valais Alps, form the high Pennine mountain frontier along the northern side of Valle d’Aosta, facing Switzerland’s canton of Valais. The range includes the Matterhorn, known in Italy as Monte Cervino, and the Monte Rosa massif. Cervino’s steep pyramid and Monte Rosa’s broad, glacier-covered mass give this Alpine landscape two distinct silhouettes, although the summits visible vary with the viewpoint. Valle d’Aosta’s northern side valleys rise toward this mountain barrier, creating panoramas that can layer villages and wooded slopes beneath exposed rock, glaciers and snowfields—a visible transition from inhabited valleys to high-altitude terrain.
