The Qilian Mountains stretch along the Qinghai–Gansu border, forming a high mountain backdrop to Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Snow-covered summits, exposed rock and broad alpine valleys create a landscape closely tied to pastoral life, with yaks and sheep grazing on high grasslands. Snowmelt and glacier-fed rivers also help sustain the oases of Gansu’s Hexi Corridor. In summer, green meadows contrast with pale peaks, while overlapping ridgelines and small herds beneath the slopes make the mountains’ scale especially legible in photographs.
