On the Piedmont side of Gran Paradiso National Park, the Orco and Soana valleys connect the Metropolitan City of Turin to a high-Alpine landscape shared with the Aosta Valley. Established in 1922 as Italy’s first national park, it grew from a former royal hunting reserve whose protection helped preserve the Alpine ibex, now an emblem of the park. Wooded slopes give way to mountain pastures, exposed rock and glacial terrain, creating distinct layers of texture and scale in wide views. Around Ceresole Reale in the Orco Valley, the reservoir introduces a broad stretch of water beneath steep mountain walls. Higher up, the country around the Nivolet Pass is recognizable for its alpine lakes, open grasslands and winding road, contrasting with the enclosed, forested valleys below.
