The Belianske Tatry rise directly above Ždiar, a traditional Goral village on the northern side of Slovakia’s Tatras. Forming the eastern end of the mountain chain, this compact range is distinguished from the neighboring granite peaks by its limestone and dolomite geology, which creates pale cliffs, sharp ridges and broad grassy slopes. From the village and surrounding meadows, the profiles of Havran and Ždiarska vidla dominate the skyline, often layered above wooden houses, hayfields and forest. Changing cloud and low side light emphasize the folded rock faces and steep scale of the range. Much of the main ridge is closed to hiking to protect its fragile alpine habitats, so the classic panorama is best understood from Ždiar’s settled landscape and marked routes below the peaks.
