📍 Japan
Yokohama Port Opening Square, or Kaiko Hiroba, lies beside the Yokohama Archives of History near the waterfront and marks the area where the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa was concluded between Japan and the United States. The agreement helped end Japan’s long period of restricted foreign contact and preceded Yokohama’s opening as an international port in 1859. Today the square forms a visual threshold between the city’s historic foreign-settlement district and its modern harbor landscape. Views are framed by the former British Consulate’s dignified stone façade, mature trees, brick paving, and nearby streets leading toward Yamashita Park and Ōsanbashi Pier. The contrast between preserved treaty-era context, early modern architecture, and contemporary port traffic gives photographs here a compact sense of Yokohama’s transformation into a global trading city.
