📍 Italy
The views from Torre del Mangia, the 14th-century bell tower of Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, reveal how the medieval city gathers around Piazza del Campo. Far below, the shell-shaped square is divided by pale stone lines into nine brick-paved sections, recalling the Government of the Nine that once ruled Siena. This is also the setting for the Palio, the horse race contested by the city’s contrade, or neighborhood districts. Beyond the square, tightly packed buildings and terracotta rooftops follow Siena’s hills, while the cathedral and its black-and-white striped bell tower mark a separate high point. The elevated perspective makes the Campo’s distinctive geometry legible and reveals the contrast between the dense medieval streets and the rolling Tuscan countryside beyond.
